Shoe boxes are the reason most retail bags fail: heavy, rigid and awkward, and customers often leave with two.

The bag is built around the largest box on the shelf, not an average one. Measure that box, add a little, and the bag works for everything below it.
Weight is the other half: two boxes is a few kilos swinging from a handle, so 250gsm board with a rope or external folded handle is the usual specification.

Heavier board, a proper cord handle and a turned top edge.

Unbleached brown kraft is where most Australian retailers land: it takes a logo cleanly, it carries weight, and it goes out with the paper recycling.
