Rope handles thread through the top of the bag and knot or crimp inside, so the load spreads differently from a glued paper handle. On a heavy bag that is the difference between a handle that holds and one that pulls out.

They come in cotton or PP cord, satin and grosgrain ribbon, or herringbone tape, at hand or shoulder length. On a dark bag a contrasting cord does most of the design work by itself.

The board underneath is heavier than an everyday carry bag, laminated or not depending on how the bag will be used, with the top edge turned over so the cord has something solid to pull against.
